Car Hire Bosnia and Herzegovina

Until fairly recently car hire was very difficult to find in Bosnia Herzegovina. It still isn't that easy, and often you can only find it at main locations such as Sarajevo Airport.

It's very important to look at any car hire deal you take very carefully though. Unlike other European destinations you can rent cars there without collision damage waiver included - although some rental packages will include it. When comparing car rental do click through to the terms and make sure you know exactly what to expect, as it's perfectly possible to find a cheaper car offering the insurance whilst another more expensive one doesn't.

And it's not just the insurance you need to watch out for. When driving in Bosnia and Herzegovina you must have your driving licence with you at all times. A UK driving licence is only valid, however, if you are driving a car you have hired outside of Bosnia. If the car you have rented was from within the country you need an International Driving Permit as well which should be obtained before you leave the UK. Also check with your car hire company if there are any other requirements.

The roads in the country are of variable quality and can get quite tricky, especially after heavy rain or in winter. Winter tyres and snowchains are required between 15 November and 15 April. Your rental company should provide these (they are likely to charge extra for them though).

Day and night you need to use dipped headlamps. Roads can be unlit or badly lit so it is recommended that you do not plan a long journey after dark. If you are involved in an accident, do not leave until the police arrive, and expect to be breathalysed.
